The Alianza Progresista (Progressist Alliance) was founded on February 10th, 1999. It is formed by several internal groups like political parties as the Christian Democratic Party and others parties, and by independent citizens also.
Alianza Progresista is a center-left political group inside the coalition Encuentro Progresista-Frente Amplio-Nueva Mayoría.
The most important leader of the Alianza Progresista is Rodolfo Nin Novoa. He is a former member of the traditional Partido Nacional (National Party) that left that group in 1994. After that when Nin Novoa and other political leaders and groups allied with the Frente Amplio the coalition Encuentro Progresista-Frente Amplio was born. Rodolfo Nin Novoa was the candidate elected as vice-president of Uruguay in the October 2004 presidential elections, when the socialist doctor Tabaré Vázquez was elected as president.

The flag used by Alianza Progresista is sky blue with the number of the list that appear in the ballot "738". Below the number there are four lines of the colors yellow, red, blue and white. The three lower colors form the "Flag of Otorgués" used by the Frente Amplio as its political flag. With the yellow color, the four colors that usually appear on the variant of the Frente Amplio flag with "FA" acronym logo are present.

This variant worked as a "poster" for the elections. As a basis it has the common design of the Alianza Progresista flag: the sky blue color with the number "738" of the list ballot and the four lines. However it has some elements added: the names of both candidates for President and for Vice-President. "TABARE" for Tabaré Vázquez, candidate for president, and "NIN" for Rodolfo Nin Novoa, candidate for vice-president. The flag also has a small Encuentro Progresista flag and a small Frente Amplio composite design flag, and the name of the political party: "Alianza Progresista"
